Emory University is seeking to patent a new nanotechnology treatment for osteoporosis, a very common disease that causes bone loss.
In a U.S. patent application made public today, Emory notes that osteoporosis is reaching epidemic proportions. "Nanotechnology has raised exciting possibilities for the development of novel therapeutic agents," it says.
Emory's new technology, developed with South Korea's Seoul National University, uses "silica-based fluorescent nanoparticles endowed with natural bone targeting capabilities" which have the capacity to increase bone mineral density and "may be applicable to the amelioration of numerous osteoporotic conditions."
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 10 million Americans are believed to already have the disease.
