UK institute highlights potential health risk from nanoparticle inhalation

A researcher from the UK Institute of Occupational Medicine has published a discussion paper on the potential health risk of exposure to small particles and fibres, including carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoplatelets.

The author concludes that such materials may accumulate in the lung to cause health problem including inflammation and damage to DNA, leading to disease.

Also described is the work of the institute to develop a unifying theory of the pathogenic action of such particles, aiming to find structure-activity relationships to predict toxicity and reduce the need for toxicology testing for the risk assessment of nanomaterials.
