Researchers demonstrate polymer coating of nanoparticles increases toxicity

Scientists have found that adding a polymer coating to copper oxide nanoparticles increases the uptake and toxicity of the material in algae.
The researchers, from Canada and Brazil, showed that coated particles are more toxic compared to bare copper oxide nanoparticles when applied to the green alga species Chlamydomonas reinhardtii for six hours.

They conclude that the higher toxicity of the coated substance was mainly due to an increased capacity of these nanoparticles to penetrate plant cells, leading to a higher accumulation of the substance compared to bare nanoparticles
.
The research is published in Chemosphere.
