European Health and Safety agency calls for workers to be informed about nanomaterials

European workers need to be educated about potential risks posed by handling nanomaterials in the workplace, according to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA), which has reviewed the literature on the subject.
Communication of potential health risks posed by nanomaterials is poor, says EU-OSHA. Many Europeans, some 54%, do not know what nanotechnology is and the level of awareness of risks is low even in workplaces containing manufactured nanomaterials, says the agency.
Poor communication can lead to unjustified fears of nanomaterials or an underestimation of risks leading to inadequate risk prevention, it adds.
