The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have released a draft document, “State of the Art on the Initiatives and Activities Relevant to Risk Assessment and Risk Management of Nanotechnologies in the Food and Agriculture Sectors.”

Public comment on the document will be accepted until November 30, 2012.

The report was commissioned by WHO and FAO with the objective of summarizing and analyzing information that has become available since a 2009 international expert meeting on the potential food safety implication of the application of nanotechnologies in the food and agriculture sectors.

The document reviews national and international activities on the risk analysis of nanomaterials in the food and agriculture sectors that have been carried out since the meeting, while also looking at approaches that identify and implement strategies to address potential hazards associated with the use of nanotechnology-related products or techniques.

The report concludes with an assessment of progress made since 2009, as well as several recommendations for moving forward. The full document can be downloaded on the FAO website.
