A Slovenian researcher has published an analysis of national newspaper coverage of nanotechnology, concluding that there is a lack of information for the public which makes it difficult for consumers to make informed decisions about the safety of products.
The paper concludes that there is a need for more open engagement of the public with nanotechnology due to the large number of products already on the market, to enable the public to make informed decisions regarding potential effects on health and the environment.
This follows a previous study by researchers in the US which also concluded that the risks of nanotechnology are overlooked by media (CW 24 November 2011).
The research is published in the journal Science Communication.
