Researchers from the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the US Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) have concluded that no single method currently exists that, when used on its own, can adequately describe a nanomaterial.
The report, prepared for the International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulators (ICCR), provides an introduction to the most relevant methods for the characterisation of nanomaterials. It concludes that none of these methods could fully describe a nanomaterial on their own, and recommends further work to examine methods useful for determining solubility, size and the stability and persistence of nanomaterials in biological media.
The document was endorsed for publication by all ICCR members, which includes the European Commission - DG Health and Consumers, the US Food and Drug Administration, the Japanese Ministry of Health, and Health Canada.
