EU researchers develop radiolabelling technique to monitor nanoparticles

Scientists from the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) have developed a system to generate a new type of radiolabelled titanium dioxide nanoparticles that can be used to measure the biodistribution or cellular uptake of the substance in toxicological studies.
The system uses proton irradiation to label particles whilst keeping the temperature of the particles in a safe range, which prevents alterations in particle structure due to excess temperatures. The authors highlight this technique could now be used to radiolabel nanoparticle powders other than titanium dioxide for toxicological testing.
The research is published in the Journal of Nanoparticle Research.
