Scientists have published a review article on scientific research on life-cycle assessment (LCA) and risk assessment (RA) for engineered nanomaterials.
The researchers, based at the Technical University of Denmark and the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Italy, conducted a literature review to examine how research efforts have applied the two approaches of LCA and RA together for nanomaterials, reflecting on previous experiences with applying these methods to chemicals.
They conclude that current research efforts have taken into account some key lessons learned from previous experience with chemicals, but that many key challenges remain for practically applying these methods to nanomaterials. They also highlight the need to establish proper dose metrics as crucial for applying these two methods to nanomaterials.
